Seowons in Chosun dynasty led their local communities being charge in storage and publishing of books, managing Confucian rites for ancestors and educating Confucian students. While Hyanggyos were government-financed educational institutes, Seowons were private schools leading politics, society, education, culture and etc in their local region enhancing Confucian scholar spirit. Baekwoondong Seowon was the first SaAeck Seowon. After its foundation, Seowons began to prevail the entire country as the places for research, training and education of Confucian scholars and students. A Seowon mainly consisted of a rite hall for Confucian ancestors, a lecture hall for education of Confucian students, residential hall for the students to stay and study and various annexes, which all had various letters given by kings and high ranking officials who visited on their pillars, walls and on monuments in front of them. Such letters were about the relevant local regions and Confucian scholars they enshrined. Therefore, they had symbolisms revealing the relevant Seowons’ spirits. Major SaAeck Seowons show the calligraphic aesthetic features: the aesthetics of GyeongEeJikNae (敬以直內: respecting for mind discipline) for Sosu Seowon, MunJilBinBin (文質彬彬: harmonization of form and content) for Oksan Seowon, MoBulGyeongMoJaGi (毋不敬毋自欺: serious and sincere to yourself) for Dosan Seowon, JungJeongJaDeuk (中正自得: enlightenment with righteous heart) for Dodong Seowon, WoongGangJangJung (雄强莊重: mighty and great) for Byeongsan Seowon, HwakYeonYeoDo (廓然與道: clear for justice) for Pilam Seowon, GangMyeongJunDo (剛明遵道: following justice with clear and smart attitude) for Namgye Seowon, HyeonGaYeongGwi (絃歌詠歸: following justice with joyful mind) for Museong Seowon and EuiGeumSangGyeong (衣錦尙絅: trying to be humble) for Donam Seowon. Tablets and letters were symbols of Seowons where Confucian scholars and students studied and disciplined themselves following justice through lectures. The letters written on the tablets of Seowons and the tablets themselves were symbolizing the ideal state that such scholars and students wanted to reach. They dreamed of such state with the tablets’ letters, which led them deeper and higher states. That is, tablets were considered measures, procedures and also media through which they could reach such deeper and higher states. Seowons’ construction was designed to express Confucian ideals with every building. Tablet letters were allocated meeting the meaning of such buildings for guidance and standard. Therefore, the tablet letters of SaAeck Seowons were the expression of the shriners’ spirits, symbols realizing Confucian ideals and guiding devices that led the scholars and students to every academic level. In other words, they were the calligraphy aesthetic expression of the ultimate state of Confucianism.
