『몽골비사』에서 말(馬)의 서사적 기능 ― 인물 사적의 대변자로서 ―
『몽골비사』는 몽골인이 남긴 최초의 사서다. 그 내용 대부분은 칭기스칸의 일대기지만, 그 형식은 영웅서사시와 유사하며 은유 등 문학적 요소들이 상당히 많이 첨가되어 있다. 그 문학적 요소 가운데, 말이 있다. 몽골 유목민이 남긴 기록에 말이 빈출하는 것은, 어찌 보면 당연할지도 모르겠다. 하지만 『몽골비사』에서 말은 임의로 등장하지 않는다. 특정한 인물이 특정한 상황에 놓여 있을 때, 같은 종류의 말이 등장하는 규칙성이 있다. 이러한 규칙성은 몽골 영웅서사시에서도 찾아볼 수 있는 현상이다. 서사시에서 말은 등장인물의 상황에 따라 모습을 바꾸기도 하고, 배역에 따라 다른 말이 붙여진다. 『몽골비사』가 몽골 영웅서사시의 형식을 빌리고 있다는 점, 그리고 특정한 말이 특수한 상황이나 인물에게 연결된다는 점에서 미루어보아, 『몽골비사』의 저자는 말을 수단으로 하여 역사 속 실존 인물의 행적을 평가했음을 알 수 있다. 그런데 『몽골비사』 속의 인물들은 역사 속의 인물들이다. 이는 곧, 『몽골비사』의 저자가 이 말들을 통해서 자신의 관점을 드러내고 있다는 말이 된다. 본 논문에서는 싱콜라말과 공골말, 발빠른 호박색 말을 예로 하여, 이 말들이 『몽골비사』 속에서 맡은 서사적 기능을 알아보기로 한다.
The Narrative Function of Horses in The ‘Secret History of the Mongols’ : Representatives of Personal Narratives
The Secret History of the Mongols (SHM), the first historical record written by Mongolians, describes the life of Genghis Khan. It was composed in the form of a heroic epic, a familiar writing style for the Mongols of the time. Although it records historical events and figures, it contains numerous literary elements. Personal accounts of figures are embellished with various metaphors, and horses frequently appear as a metaphorical device. The frequent appearance of horses in the records of Mongol nomads may seem natural, but in reality, they are introduced to serve a narrative function. In Mongolian heroic epics, horses often change form or are assigned to different species depending on the situation or role of the characters. This is also true for The SHM, which borrows the epic format. Horses do not appear arbitrarily; they follow a certain regularity. This suggests that the author of The SHM uses horses of historical figures and even reflect their personalities dramatically. Representative examples of horses that symbolize the narrative and character traits in the SHM include Singqola, Qongqor, and the fast dun Mare. This examines the narrative functions of these horses within The SHM. It propose a method for interpreting this literary historical record, particularly from the perspective of Mongolian Studies and research on the early history of the Mongol Empire.
